Five steps to help you Embrace Your Authentic Self
Steps to determine whether we are telling our true story or simply listening to the narratives that others have imposed on us.
Step 1: Identify the Narratives
Take a moment to reflect on the labels, stories, or comments you’ve heard about yourself over the years. These could be things people have told you or thoughts you’ve internalized.
- Write down at least 5 statements you’ve heard about yourself (e.g., “You’re too sensitive,” “You’re not creative,” “You’re always shy”).
Step 2: Question the Truth
Next to each statement, ask yourself:
- Is this true?
- If it is true, what lies behind that?
- Does this narrative align with my experiences and feelings?
- Have there been times when I acted differently from this label?
Challenge each statement by providing examples from your life that prove these labels wrong or incomplete.
Step 3: Reframe Your Story
Now, rewrite each of those statements in a way that reflects your authentic self. For example:
- “You’re too sensitive” could become “I am empathetic and in tune with my emotions.”
- “You’re always shy” could become “I take time to open up, but I connect deeply when I do.”
Step 4: Practice Showing Up Authentically
Think of a situation in your life where you tend to hold back or conform to others’ expectations. This might be at work, with friends, or even with family.
- Plan one small action you can take to show up as your authentic self in that situation. It could be expressing your opinion, setting a boundary, or sharing a part of yourself you usually keep hidden.
Step 5: Reflect and Celebrate
At the end of each day, take a moment to reflect:
- How did you show up as your authentic self today?
- How did it feel? What did you learn about yourself?
Celebrate even the smallest moments where you stayed true to yourself. Recognize that being authentic is a journey, and every step you take is a victory.
