Exercise for Paying Attention to Your Emotions

This exercise is to help you become aware of your emotions so it is possible to regulate them

Step 1: Track Your Emotions

  1. For the next 7 days, carry a small notebook or use your phone to keep an “Emotion Tracker.”
  2. Throughout the day, record moments when you feel strong emotions—both positive and negative. Note:
    • What happened (the situation)?
    • What emotion did you feel (e.g., joy, frustration, excitement, anxiety)?
    • What you were doing at the time?

Example:

  • Situation: I was talking to a friend about my goals.
  • Emotion: Excitement
  • Activity: Discussing a potential new project

Step 2: Identify Patterns

At the end of the week, review your notes and identify any patterns. Ask yourself:

  • What activities or situations made me feel most alive and energized?
  • What moments drained me or made me feel stressed, frustrated, or anxious?

Step 3: Reflect and Take Action

  • Choose one positive activity or emotion that stood out and make a plan to incorporate more of it into your life.
  • Identify one negative emotion or situation that you’d like to minimize and think of ways to reduce its impact.

Outcome: This exercise will help you become more aware of the activities and situations that align with your true self, allowing you to make conscious choices that foster positivity and fulfillment.

This exercise is a great tool for guiding yourself on your journey of self-discovery and self-awareness!
